Heimat/Home

Home. That's a word that didn't really mean much to me. Of course, I'm glad to be from Germany. All the possibilities connected with my nationality are always fascinating. Especially in situations like in border controls, when I'm far and away the fastest person getting through the border. Being blond, female and german can open many doors. I'm also glad to be from the Ruhr Area in the western part of Germany. The people are known for being honest, direct and most of the times straightforward, what I absolutely appreciate.

Nevertheless, I never really identified myself as german or would have said that I'm attached to my native soil. The word home didn't have a big meaning to me. I declared myself as independent and restless, which for me, was kind of in conflict with the feeling of home.

I booked the flight back to Germany quiet early in September. Neither friends nor my family knew that I'd come. I planned to come as a surprise for four days from Christmas Eve on in the sense of: "Helloo, I'm the gift". But actually, I almost spent two weeks in Dortmund to meet my Scottish love Matthew again.

I really enjoyed the time back home. Spending time with my family and my closest friends was the best Christmas gift ever. Also the time with Matthew was wonderful even though it was only four days and the time flashed past (thank you ♥). Some other important things about my time in Germany were of course the Christmas market, glühwein, the variety of vegetarian dishes, Sushi! and german beer. An interesting anecdote: Almost every wine I loved before going to Georgia is - compared to Georgian wine - not really tasty anymore.

Now I'm happy to be back in Ozurgeti. Although the time in Germany was wonderful, it also showed me that I appreciate my time in Georgia. I want to use that wonderful opportunity.  Also I couldn't survive in Dortmund at the moment. The money I need to spend two weeks in Dortmund (rent is not included) is enough to live a good life in Ozurgeti for at least one and a half months. And this is something that is thought provoking. Regarding economics, we can think again about capitalism and its effects on the world, especially in developing countries. On a political level we can question the current development cooperation and think about more or maybe even better ways to support and cooperate with countries like Georgia. And last but not least, on a philosophical level, we can challenge our own attitudes towards feelings like happiness  or the importance of  wealth.

The first four months in Georgia as well as my time in Germany showed me that the word "home" definitely has a meaning to me (although it's not connected with a specific place). I think that I'm able to build up more than one "home" (by the way it's quiet interesting that there is no plural for the word "home" in German and also the meaning in English is different). My first home is of course the place where my family still lives, the place where I went to school and university and met my closest friends. In fact, this isn't only one specific place but I like to summarize it as "Dortmund".
After four months here, I cannot declare Georgia as my second home yet. But I can see the potential. If you cope with the difficulties, get to know the language, culture and people, I'm convinced that you could fall in love with Georgia. I'm also convinced that this is possible with every country, city, almost every place on earth. That's why I hope that I - someday - can call many places "home".

Süße Grüße,

Katja
